Elementary Linux crash course - Lớp học Linux sơ cấp

Bắt đầu từ cuối tháng 12/2006, Trung tâm kỹ thuật số của AUF (CNF-AUF) tại Hà Nội, phối hợp với những thành viên tự nguyện của Hanoilug, tổ chức các lớp học về Linux bằng tiếng Việt. Lớp đầu tiên đã được tổ chức ngày thứ bảy 16 tháng 12 năm 2006. Thông tin về nội dung của lợp học này được công bố ở đây cho mọi người có thể tham khảo và góp ý. Tuy nhiên, chúng tôi dùng tiếng Anh để cho phép mọi người Hanoilug có thể tham gia ý kiến và góp xây dựng nội dung của lớp học. Thông tin tiếng Việt về nội dung của lớp học đã được tổ chức ngày 16/12/2006 có thể đọc trên trang của dự án C3LD (xem đây) ; một số ảnh về lớp học đó có thể xem ở đây.

Lớp tới sẽ được tổ chức vào ngày thứ bảy 12 tháng 05/2007 .

Thao tác thực hiện theo phương thức 1 người 1 máy (Celeron 2,2 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, HDD 40 GB) đã nối internet qua ADSL. Lớp học này chỉ nhận 12 học viên để đảm bảo chất lượng học tập. CNF-AUF is organizing an elementary Linux course for complete beginners, in collaboration with Hanoilug. Preliminary information about this course follows. This course is intended for Vietnamese people, mainly. Similar courses for foreigners might be organized in the future.

General information about the course

  1. Period : Next course is likely to be on Saturday 3rd March, 2007 (to be confirmed later)
  2. Duration : to be fixed (at least one full day)
  3. Language : Vietnamese and/or English (with Vietnamese translation).
  4. Public target : Vietnamese people interested in using and learning to use Linux for everyday computer tasks (e-mail, web surfing, office work, etc.).
  5. Number of participants : minimum 6, maximum 12 (on basis of first registration).
  6. Registration period : by phone at 868.48.85 or by email at vu.do.quynh (@) auf.org
  7. Linux distribution used for the course : Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake).

Pre-requisites

  • To have a minimum experience in using computers for everyday work: internet (email, web surfing), office work and installing application softwares.
  • To wish to install Linux at home (or at work) for an everyday use, in paralell or not with other computer operating systems.

Note: To have some foreign language knowledge, either English or French reading, will greatly help.

Objectives of the course

After the course, participants should be able to install a Linux workstation from a Live CD ; to work with the GNOME desktop manager ; to install and remove applications ; to use very basic shell line commands.

Thoroughly the timing will be :

Saturday

  • Morning session (8h00-12h00): will go through until the installation from the live CD is finished, including installing a few extra applications and proprietary stuff (mp3, flash, MS fonts)
  • Lunch : 12h-13h (participants take care of their own lunch)
  • Afternoon session (13h-17h00): Basic shell commands and practices

Sunday

  • Morning session (8h30-12h00): More shell commands ; using applications like OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird, GAIM, GIMP, etc. ; answering questions.

2. Use of Live CDs

Estimation of time : 30 - 45 minutes.

  • What is a live CD ? (brief history, cite Knoppix etc.)
  • How to obtain a live CD Ubuntu and which live CD shall we use ?
  • How to use the Ubuntu live CD ? How to modify the computer boot options ?
  • Booting the computer with the Ubuntu live CD
  • Getting around the Ubuntu Desktop : describing thoroughly applicable applications and connecting to internet via Wifi, Lan and phone modem.
  • Describing the Linux file system (under Ubuntu)
  • Using USB keys.
  • Other useful Linux Live CDs (Linux Mint, etc.)

3. Installation of Ubuntu from the live CD

Estimation of time : 60-90 minutes (with 30 minutes for the practical installation of the base system)

  • Hard disks under Linux.
  • Partitioning hard disks for Linux (mouting separately /home, the size of the swap partition).
  • Going through the install process (6 steps) - selecting Vietnamese as default language.
  • Partitioning strategies (while the system files are being installed), especially when two OS have to co-exist.
  • Rebooting the system installed on the hard disk
  • Description of main applications available and of the GNOME Desktop panel
  • Use of Easyubuntu or of Automatix to install proprietary drivers (MP3, Video codecs, Flash player, MS Truetype core fonts, etc.). For the course purpose, we may limit to MS TT Core fonts, Flash and MP3, that would do for circa 15 minutes.

4. Managing files under Linux and basic shell commands

Estimation of time : 60-90 minutes.

  • Users and administration tasks with Ubuntu : the super-user “root” and the sudo command.
  • Naming files under Linux.
  • The terminal and basic shell commands to know: ls, cat, mkdir, chdir, less, cp, rm, mv, etc. (see details below)
  • Managing file's rights under Linux: chown, chgrp, chmod
  • Basics of the “apt” command: apt-get, apt-get upgrade, apt-get update, apt-cache, apt-cdrom (and alternative such as aptitude and synaptic)
  • editing files with vi or with gedit, editing the ”/etc/apt/sources.list” file.
  • Getting help with the “man” command.
  • Installing a printer (local and over the network).

Basic and useful commands

Estimation of time : depends on the content, approximately 5 minutes per command, including practice with prepared exercices. May not depass 60 minutes for the essentials commands.

5. Applications and software management

Estimation of time : 60-70 minutes.

  • Office applications : configuring Openoffice.org; showing Writer, Calc, Impress; showing file formats; PDF export (about 20 minutes)
  • Surfing the web with Mozilla Firefox : showing preferences, tools, extensions (about 10 minutes)
  • Installing extra applications through the Applications menu (normal and advanced mode, about 15 minutes)
  • Installation (and configuration) of x-unikey, Scim, for typing Vietnamese (about 15 minutes)
  • Managing updates with the package update manager (about 5 minutes, just showing an example).
